Mission Operations

Operating spacecraft and their associated ground systems is a complex and often costly business. No matter how well designed and engineered the space and ground segment may be, there is inevitably an intolerance of faults, failures and errors. This is especially so where the mission is providing a service directly to end-users.

Flight Directors and Mission Operations Managers don't like surprises. They want to know that: all eventualities have been considered; appropriate procedures have been developed and validated; all systems have been correctly configured; and all operators have been trained. No change is made without a thorough analysis and approval process.

This is good. It keeps things safe. It prevents surprises.

However, it also means that improvement over time is S L O W. Operations concepts defined years before launch become entrenched, regardless of their subsequent suitability.

It doesn't have to be so. Every organisation with a QA department has "Continuous Improvement" as one of its objectives. The need for continuous improvement doesn't stop at the door of the Main Control Room. At JAYLAMBDA we have supported flight and ground operations for civil, military and institutional missions, as well as working with industrial clients on their implementation of continuous improvement processes. By studying and analysing their best practices we have developed our Mission Operations Continuous Improvement Process (MOCIP)

MOCIP provides a framework that can be integrated with any operator's existing operations concept and QA processes, to provide regular, clear recommendations to the mission managers of areas where risks can be mitigated or efficiencies made.

Talk to JAYLAMBA about how MOCIP can transform your QA processes from a box-ticking exercise into something genuinely valuable.
